How IPL actually works.
A pulse of light, the pigment in your hair, and the follicle underneath. That is the whole mechanism, and it explains both what IPL can do for you and who it will not work for.
Light, pigment, heat.
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. The handset fires a broad pulse into the skin, the pigment in your hair absorbs it, and that pigment turns the light into heat. The heat travels down the hair to the follicle it grew from and interrupts the growth cycle, so what grows back arrives finer and slower. That is long-lasting hair reduction, and it is the honest ceiling of the technology. No IPL device removes hair permanently, whatever the box promises.
The light needs pigment to find. Dark brown and black hair carry plenty of it and respond well. Blonde, red, grey and white hair carry too little for the light to grab, and the deepest skin tones fall outside the safe range on every IPL device sold, not only ours. Check your hair and skin combination in the two-step checker before you buy anything.
Your follicles don’t share a schedule.
Only some follicles sit in the active growth phase where light can reach them. The rest are resting, and they ignore the flash completely. One session a week catches a new set as they cycle in, which is why IPL is a course and not a one-off. Reduction builds gradually; the manufacturer reports ~4 weeks. Results vary with hair color and skin tone.
Ten minutes a week is the real commitment. Miss a fortnight and you are not back to zero, but you have handed the resting follicles their window.

Light becomes heat. Cold skin is how you keep going.
Heat is what makes people abandon a device in week three. The Pearl 01 chills its contact plate to 43°F, so each pulse lands on skin that is already cold and you feel a short warmth rather than a snap. Nine levels let you settle at the highest setting you can hold every week, and staying there matters more than any single session.
Wear the included eye protection. Patch test 24 hours before your first session. Keep the window away from tattoos, dark moles, and recently sun-exposed skin.
